The European chamois is one of New Zealand’s most elusive and challenging game animals. Known for their incredible speed, sharp senses, and remarkable agility over steep terrain, they offer a hunt that will test your skills and endurance high in the Southern Alps.

Native to the mountains of Central Europe, chamois have long been prized by hunters in search of a true alpine challenge. In 1907, their introduction to New Zealand came as the result of a remarkable diplomatic effort. After several failed attempts, New Zealand mountaineer Malcolm Ross, T.E. Donne, and future Prime Minister Sir Joseph Ward successfully persuaded Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary to gift eight chamois to New Zealand.
The animals traveled by rail from the Austrian Alps to Germany, then by ship to London, before continuing on to Wellington via the Canary Islands, South Africa, and Tasmania. Upon arrival, the eight chamois were transferred to the Tasman Valley beneath Mount Cook, where they quickly adapted to New Zealand’s rugged alpine landscape, eventually becoming a sought-after species for guided trophy hunts.

Fast forward to 2025, and Venator continues to offer world-class chamois hunts in some of the most remote and breathtaking terrain New Zealand has to offer. Sharing their range with Himalayan tahr, these elusive animals demand stamina and precise shooting from any hunter determined to pursue them.
At Venator, we’re proud to continue this truly memorable hunting tradition, guiding guests through breathtaking alpine terrain in search of a trophy. For those seeking a challenging high-country adventure, a chamois hunt with Venator is an experience like no other.

The Himalayan tahr is one of New Zealand’s most iconic alpine game animals. Known for their thick manes, incredible agility, and love of steep terrain, they’ve become a defining part of our hunting history, offering one of the most challenging hunts in the Southern Hemisphere. Navigating rugged landscapes, making long-range shots, and enduring physically demanding conditions, the pursuit of tahr leaves a lasting impression on those who venture into the heights in search of one of the mountains’ most prized trophies. Native to the mountains of India and Nepal, the Himalayan tahr spent centuries largely unnoticed by humans. It was less sought after by hunters, as other animals — like the larger-horned bharal and ibex — were more popular targets.

The red stag, known as the king’s animal, is a majestic creature of unrivalled prestige. Few animals can match the sight of a red stag in full antlers — both tall and powerful. For centuries, these magnificent animals roamed the highlands of Europe and Britain, cherished by kings, nobility, and hunters alike. A symbol of power and status, they were admired and fiercely protected.
